Mao Jiayi Wins the First Prize in the Hubei District Final of the “FLTRP ETIC Cup” National English-Speaking Contest

  

The “FLTRP ETIC Cup” National English-speaking contest Hubei final was held at Huazhong University of Science and Technology on October 27, 2018. Under the careful guidance of Hou Xianglang, the instructor and associate professor of the School of Foreign Languages (SFL), Mao Jiayi from Class Q1741 of SFL gained praises from all the judges and won the first prize in the contest with her standard pronunciation and intonation, marvelous expressions, good psychological quality and self-confidence.

  

The Hubei final is composed of three parts. Firstly, the contestants are required to give a three-minute speech relating to the topic of “The Stones” given by the contest organizing committee; secondly, the contestants are required to give a three-minute impromptu speech; and thirdly, the contestants are required to answer questions from the judges within two minutes. The three parts are designed to comprehensively evaluate the contestants’ English-speaking ability, English knowledge and their capability of adaptation to the spontaneous situation.

  

The contest is jointly sponsored by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Committee of the Ministry of Education, and the University Foreign Language Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education. It is a show platform for English talents throughout the country. Founded in 2002 by the Foreign Research Institute Unipus, the FLTRP Cup National English-speaking contest has attracted wide attention at home and abroad, and has become the largest and highest-level English-speaking competition in China.
