Established in 1992, the STHM has been a featured school in Hubei University of Economics since 2004. It consists of four departments: department of tourism management, department of hospitality management, department of MICE economics and management and department of culinary and nutritional education, with four undergraduate majors, namely tourism management, hospitality management, MICE economics and management, and culinary and nutritional education. The number of students at school is 918 in 2018.

The STHM currently has 40 full-time faculty members, including 5 professors, 14 associate professors, 20 doctors, 17 lecturers, and 3 doctoral candidates. Among the full-time teachers, one enjoyed the “Special Government Allowance of the State Council”, one has won the medal of  “National May 1st Labor Medal”,  two have won the medal of “Hubei Provincial May 1st Labor Medal”, one has been selected as “Chutian Craftsmen”, five have been selected as  “Chinese Cooking Masters” and “Chinese Catering Service Masters”, one is National Tourism Administration Youth Expert, one is a member of Hubei Provincial Tourism Management Professional Teaching Guidance Committee, one is a member of 1st National Food Safety Expert, three are judges of National Tour Guide Qualification Examination, two are overseas full-time teachers. Prof. Alastair Morrison(a world-renowned tourism scholar), Prof. WU Bihu from the Tourism Research and Planning Center of Peking University, and Prof. SU Yang from the Development Research Center of the State Council are distinguished professors. Professor CAI Xiaomei from the School of  Tourism Management of South China Normal University has been the lecture professor of Chutian Scholars.

The school is committed to building a national first-rate tourism management discipline. In 2012, business administration was authorized as Hubei provincial key primary discipline, in which tourism management was included as a main research direction. In 2014, tourism management was approved as the post discipline of Hubei Province “Chutian Scholarship”. In 2016, the “Research on Tourism Spatial Structure and Regional Tourism Development” was selected as the outstanding young and middle-aged youth science and technology innovation team project in Hubei province. The school has  national-level scientific research and teaching platforms: Chinese Culture of Beverage and Food Training Base for the International Promotion of Chinese Language, Hubei National Park Research Center, Tourism Planning and Development Research Institute and other scientific research institutions. There are three stable research directions having been formed:  National Park Management and Institutional Innovation, Tourism Space Research, and Chinese Food Culture International Communication, around which a number of high-level research results have been produced. In recent years, faculty teachers have hosted 3 National Social Science Fund projects, chaired more than ten science and research projects which is above the provincial and ministerial level, such as the Humanities and Social Science Fund Project of the Ministry of Education, the China Postdoctoral Research Foundation Project , the National Tourism Administration Scientific Research Project, and the Hubei Provincial Social Science Fund Project, took charge of more than 20 cross-subject projects commissioned by the National Development and Reform Commission, Mount. Huangshan Scenic Area Administrative Committee, Fangtai Group and other enterprises and institutions, and have more than 10 academic monographs published. The faculty published more than 300 academic papers in total in Economic Geography , Tourism Tribune and so forth, 3 SSCI journal papers in Applied Spatial Analysis and Policy and Sustainability. The school has won the prize of the Hubei Provincial People's Government Development Research Award, the State Civil Affairs Commission Social Science Research Achievement Award, the Ministry of Finance National Outstanding Theoretical Research Achievement Award, Wuhan Social Science Award for Outstanding Achievements and other scientific research awards.

In recent years, the faculty have participated extensively in international and domestic academic conferences, and have conducted academic exchanges and visits in the United States, France, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and other countries or regions. They have established close ties with the China Tourism Research Institute, Tourism Research and Planning Center of Peking University and other well-known universities and scientific research institutions, and invited many famous   domestic and foreign scholars to hold various types of academic activities in our university.

The school is committed to cultivating inter-discipline and applied high-quality talents, which is conducted by the market demand, innovates the talent training pattern and improves the training quality of talents. The school has a national training center for masters of skills and a training base of Hubei province for the World Skills Competition Cooking (western-style food). In 2008, the demonstration center for tourism and catering experiment (training) was rated as a provincial demonstration center for experimental teaching. In 2015, this training center, an important platform for the economic management experimental teaching center of HBUE, was approved as a state-level experimental teaching demonstration center. In 2012, the Undergraduate Program of Tourism Management was approved as talents training program for the strategic pillar industry in Hubei province. In 2014, a cooperation agreement was reached between the school and  Western Hubei Ecotourism Cultural Circle Investment Co., Ltd. to build a provincial training base. In 2016, we cooperated with Zhongbai Group to found the “Zhongbai Canglong College” in order to cultivate modern management talents in modern service industry. In 2018, the teaching team from the department of hospitality management won the “First Prize of Teaching Achievement in Hubei Province”. Shanghai Forever Exhibition Co., Ltd. established the "Hengjin Scholarship" program in the school. The school keeps close contacts with a number of renowned international hotel groups and tourism companies to provide students with internships and employment services.

In the past five years, students have won numerous awards in academic competitions and more than 10 projects were at national and provincial level. Twenty-seven students won the honorary titles such as “The Chinese Future Star of MICE Industry”, “Star of the Guide to the Future” and “Provincial-level Social Practice Advanced Model”. More than 40 dissertations were selected as Outstanding Bachelor Thesis in Hubei Province. Nearly 100 graduates have obtained postgraduate offer from such famous universities as Surrey University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Passau University, Renmin University of China, Wuhan University, Nankai University, and Sichuan University. Nearly 200 people have joined world-renowned tourism and hotel groups. The graduate employment rate has remained above 90%.
