The School of Economics and Trade Launched Academic Salon Activities of Young Scholars Forum

On Nov.15th, 2019, the School of Economics and Trade launched academic salon activities of young scholars forum. Two young teachers, Jiang Tao and Chen Jie gave reports in this activity. Members of young scholars forum and teachers interested in this topic attended the activity.

Jiang Tao's paper titled "How Primary Education Supply Affects Fertility--Evidence from" Withdrawing Points and Joining Schools ", which mainly explores the impact of the sharp decline in the number of primary schools on the birth rate in 2001. Based on the idea that the number of primary schools in the region has dropped sharply and the distance between schools has become longer, which has led to an increasement in the cost of raising children and thus suppressed the demand for children, the paper attributes the decline in the birth rate in our country to the sharp drop in the number of primary schools. This paper uses the data of 255 prefecture-level cities in China from 1999 to 2013. The conclusion shows that 30% of the impact of the decline in the number of primary schools on the birth rate is due to the distance from school. Better road conditions can ease that negative impact. CEPS data further showed that the farther distance away from school, the fewer children the family has. The policy significance of this paper is to promote the fertility rate, the government should strictly follow the principle of "entering schools nearby" and increase the supply of primary schools

The topic reported by Jie Chen titled the Influence of parental absence on teenagers’ school bullying in a big city-An empirical analysis based on 2018 Beijing student health monitoring data. Based on the analysis of students' health monitoring data in Beijing in 2018, the article draws the following conclusions: First, teenagers whose parents are absent are more bullied and seriously injured; Second, if both parents have to have only one companion and the other absent for various reasons, those whose mothers are absent and whose fathers are present are less seriously injured than those whose fathers are absent and whose mothers are present, and there is no difference in common bullying. Thirdly, there is no significant difference in the influence of the unilateral absence of the father or mother on the teenagers suffering from school bullying in all educational stages. The absence of parents is the best on the whole, but the influence is mainly reflected in the primary school and junior high school, and has no significant influence on the teenagers in senior high school. Fourth, the absence of mother will significantly reduce the probability of serious injury to adolescents in high school, but has no significant impact on adolescents in junior high school. The absence of both parents is significant to reduce the probability of serious injury for junior high school and senior high school teenagers, but it only has a significant effect on reducing the number of injuries in junior high school and has no significant effect on senior high school. The teachers of the school of economics and trade had a heated exchange and discussion on the action mechanism and logic chain of the problem, and gave effective suggestions for improving the article. Everyone felt the benefits of this academic exchange.
