Welcome new students
It is the time of a year to welcome new students. August 30th was orientation day and the university was adorned with colorful balloons and huge eye-catching banners that read “Welcome New Students.”
In the early morning hours the reception desks were already surrounded by fresh and excited faces of the young men and women who came to become part HBUE. “This is my first time to enter such a beautiful university, and it makes me very happy,” said Tian, a new student from the School of Arts. “The subsequent military training might be hard, but I’m fully prepared already.”
Another new student Zhang also shared his feelings about orientation with us stating that, “the university is covered with green. The air is fresh here and all this makes people very comfortable.” Zhang enrolled in the School of Statistics and he came to orientation with his father.
The university’s Party Secretary Wen Xingsheng, Vice President Qi Laying, Vice President Wu Xianfu, Party Vice Secretary Liao Changlin and leaders from relevant departments came to the scene to inspect the process of welcoming the new students. They were especially interested in the conditions of the orientation reception and the processing of student loans and Uni-cards. Party Secretary Wen expressed his sincere welcome to the freshmen students and said to the parents that HBUE will play a responsible role in cultivating those talented young scholars.
“Hello, I am new here and I don’t know where I should start,” Wen Xingsheng said acting as a freshman. “Can you help with me the orientation procedure?” he asked the volunteer at the reception desk of the Department of Economics. After hearing about the considerate “one-stop” service, Wen highly praised the efficiency and convenience it brings to the new students. Wen also praised other services including the Dean and Vice Dean of the School of Arts acting as the head teachers and class advisors for freshmen.
The 2014 orientation was successfully held and well-organized. Leading up to this event the university has held several meetings in order to make all the necessary arrangements for a successful orientation. Among the preparations for this year was the launch of online orientation which largely improved the efficiency of enrollment. One-on-one voluntary service at reception desks, campus tours and school buses taking students directly to the dormitories were all part of the many preparations. The Student Activity Center, where the air conditioner was turned on, was also made available as a place for parents to rest.
To ensure safety and order, the President’s Office, the Student Affairs Department, the Youth League Committee, the Finance Department, the Internet Technology Department, the Logistics Department and many other departments within the school all closely cooperated with each other during orientation.
Among this year’s 7303 newly enrolled students, 53 are in master’s degree programs, 3704 are undergraduates coming to us from high school and 200 are undergraduates from Junior Colleges. 114 are in the School of International Education, 3030 are in the College of Law & Business and 202 are in the School of Continuing Education.
