College Hosts Academic Lecture on "Opportunities and Challenges of 'Big Design'"

News from this website (Correspondent: Yang Jie) In order to effectively advance the New Financial and Economic reform at the college, promote the development of teachers' teaching and professional growth, and further implement teacher training, the Art and Design College successfully organized an academic exchange lecture on November 10, 2023. The lecture, titled Opportunities and Challenges of 'Big Design' – Reflections on the Integration of Arts and Sciences in Design Talent Cultivation, was presented by Deputy Dean Deng Jun from the School of Urban Design at Wuhan University. The academic exchange activity was hosted by Vice Dean Zhang Yang, and all faculty members participated.

Deputy Dean Deng Jun elaborated on the connotations and characteristics of Big Design, emphasizing its aspects of transcending disciplinary boundaries, interdisciplinary attributes, and diversity of outcomes. He analyzed the opportunities and challenges faced by Big Design in the current context. Deng highlighted that opportunities arise from the contingency of art, the stage-specificity of business, a certain degree of flexibility, and the rapid, intensive, and widespread development characteristics of technology. Challenges, on the other hand, stem from the impact of technological advancements, such as artificial intelligence, on design education. This includes efficiency leaps, lowered entry barriers, quality upgrades, increased ceilings, paradigm shifts, comprehensive introduction of AI capabilities, and the construction of a new paradigm for intelligent design. Deng stressed the importance of redefining knowledge, understanding change, and recognizing opportunities.

Subsequently, Deng Jun introduced Wuhan University's exploration in the development of art and science integration and shared insights on how to cultivate intelligent talents that meet the needs of the times, known as the Wuhan University Perspective.

After the lecture, Deng Jun engaged in thorough discussions and exchanges with the college faculty on issues related to talent cultivation, program development, and teacher development.

Professor Gu Chen, the Dean of the Art and Design College, expressed sincere thanks for Deng Jun's excellent lecture. She pointed out that the clear theme, logical structure, thorough explanation, and rich content of the academic lecture have strong guiding and targeted significance for the college's in-depth promotion of the New Financial and Economic reform. The lecture also provided valuable experiences for the interdisciplinary development of art and technology, innovative integration of disciplines, and the reform of talent cultivation models.
